Skeleton

The Story Behind The Song

I knew from the beginning that I wanted to release this song near Halloween. Thinking about what song I should release in October was what gave me the idea to write a song called Skeleton entirely.

It started out with an extended metaphor:

A skeleton representing what emotionally remains of a person who gave everything they had to another individual, who didn't recognize the value of such vulnerability and left when the other had nothing more left to give.

I went into a writing session with my cowriter and coproducer: Johnny Cummings, and shared with him a few chords and lyrics I had already come up with for a verse/chorus. I actually began writing this song on guitar, and then Johnny played it on the keyboard and we were both like "this is a piano song" which is really great because I don't have any piano songs released yet, and my first instrument was the piano.

Listen!

Lyrics

Nothing left to see
Nothing more to do
Stretched my skin wore it thin 'til I was black and blue
Just for you
Just for you

Everything to take
Everything you choose
Paid the price sacrificed everything for you
Just for you
Just for you

I'm a skeleton
This frame is my home
My heart went and failed from being in the cold
Just a skeleton
Mind made out of stone
To mark the bed where I lay dead alone
But you can't feel a thing, when you're made of bones

Never would complain
Never did refuse
You took control I played the role whatever I could do
Just for you
Just for you

Eventually I failed
Eventually you knew
The well went dry but I still cry waiting here for you
Just for you
I loved you

And now I'm a skeleton
This frame is my home
My heart went and failed from being in the cold
Just a skeleton
Mind made out of stone
To mark the bed where I lay dead alone
But you can't feel a thing, when you're made of bones

Bound in chains to your twisted game
And this vacancy's all that remains
But I'll stay in the same place
Just digging my own grave

Nothing left to see
Nothing more to do
Stretched my skin wore it thin 'til I was black and blue
Just for you
Just for you

I'm a skeleton
This frame is my home
My heart went and failed from being in the cold
Just a skeleton
Mind made out of stone
To mark the bed where I lay dead alone
But you can't feel a thing, when you're made of bones
You can't feel a thing, when you're made of bones
